Immunization

The nature of the hemodialysis treatment exposes patients to an increased risk for preventable infections. Efforts to prevent these infections are essential. Within the ESRD patient population, the incidence of some vaccine-preventable diseases is higher, as is the severity of those infections.

The CDC recommends immunizations for pneumonia and hepatitis B for immune compromised patients with ESRD. Dialysis patients are at a higher risk of getting pneumonia than people without a chronic illness. Working with the large volumes of blood in the dialysis clinic increases the risk of Hepatitis B transmission.
